Vienna is one of the great artistic cities of Europe and eminent art historian Charles FitzRoy will be the perfect guide.
The Habsburg dynasty, whose capital it was for 800 years, formed truly extraordinary collections of art, and we will be visiting the masterpieces housed in the Kuntshistorisches and Albertina Museums, and fabulous Treasury in the Hofburg Palace, as well as the collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein. In the years around 1900, Vienna once again became the centre of culture in Europe, and we will be looking at the most original works of the Jugenstil movement: Otto Wagner’s Secession building, and the paintings of Klimt and Schiele in the Belvedere Palace. We will also pay tribute to the city’s unsurpassed musical heritage, ranging from Mozart and Beethoven to Brahms and Mahler, by attending the world-famous opera. Outside the city we will visit the magnificent Abbey of Melk, overlooking the Danube, before taking a boat down the river through the beautiful Wachau, famed for its wines, ending with a lunch in a private house. We finish the tour by attending a performance in the Spanish Riding School and holding a drinks party in one of the most prestigious private clubs in the city.
