Great Houses and Gardens of the Dutch Golden Age

From our base in the ancient university town of Utrecht, our new tour explores the country houses and gardens of the eastern part of the Netherlands.

The royal palace of Het Loo is one of a number of beautiful houses and gardens, many of them still privately owned, built at the end of the golden age of Dutch art, when the Netherlands was so closely linked, both politically and culturally, with Great Britain.

We are very lucky to have the eminent historian and art historian, Charles FitzRoy as our guide and to have been invited to visit the finest private houses and gardens in the area.

Our tour will include visits to two of the most notable collections of Dutch painting: the Mauritshuis, with its incomparable Rembrandts and Vermeers, and the Kroller-Muller Museum, with its extraordinary collection of Van Goghs.

For those who have not ventured far beyond Amsterdam, the countryside of Gelderland is a revelation: proper farmland interspersed with beautiful woods, and hidden gems, such as the charming Hanseatic town of Zutphen.
