Our tour is based in the ancient university city of Bologna, the best-preserved mediaeval city centre on mainland Italy.
Elegant, arcaded streets lead to wonderful works of art: early Christian churches, the finest anatomical theatre in Europe, and palaces and churches decorated with magnificent frescoes by the leading masters of the Bolognese School.
From Bologna we will explore Ravenna and Padua. The superb quality of the mosaics in Ravenna is one of the wonders of early mediaeval art. Padua is home to the oldest botanical garden in Europe and Giotto’s masterpiece the Scrovegni Chapel.
We are very lucky to have Robin Lane Fox, the renowned polymath with an unsurpassed knowledge of the ancient world and of gardens, as our guide to these three cities. He will explain Ravenna’s close links with the Byzantine Empire in Constantinople, lead us through Padua’s botanical garden and show us the sublime beauty of Giotto’s frescoes.
In Bologna we will have the privilege of visits to privately owned palaces where we will be entertained by the owners.
